Trees as Infrastructure

Rewilding urban forests

For too long we have valued trees as costs, not as valuable assets. As a consequence, we have built ’cheaper’ buildings and streets, sidewalks and parks, and our cities have become concrete jungles. This has made urban environments not only unliveable, but places where humans and all other beings can’t thrive.

Recent discoveries have shown that trees are incredible beings, with powers far beyond our imagination. Trees can not only be financially viable, but also provide large economic return, on par with more traditional infrastructure investments, provided they are planted and grown in recognition of their contextual intricacies.

Trees as Infrastructure aims to develop a city wide model for nurturing our urban forests as live public infrastructure. By using smart micro-procurement contracts and system accounting for distributed tree planting and management, and a mass participatory deployment framework, we can reshape how humans are looped into the project. We aim to acknowledge and re-connect the true contribution of natural assets in our cities.
