A collaborative research study to understand how technology can build more democratic design practice

If we collectively agree the goals of designing the built environment—to create a sustainable, democratic, and equitable cities within what the planet can provide—then we need to understand both how and why we design with new technology.

This research study explores a design profession at a turning point; as digital technologies continue to automate and augment the design process. Through written work, graphic publication, and events, we aimed to uncover how the design profession could go beyond the optimisation and automation currently gearing our cities towards efficiency, consumption and extraction—and outline the potential for technology to enable better quality, more democratic, and sustainable places to live.
